2017 GeoHistory Institute

June 4-10, July 15, September 16, 2017

This summer AzGA is offering an 8 day summer institute with a focus on GeoHistory.

Only 24 teachers will be selected to participate in this professional development opportunity.  

The institute is open to teachers from all grade levels but many of the activities will be more appropriate for upper elementary and secondary classrooms.  

Participants must be employed full-time as teachers in a classroom.   

A stipend of $300 will be paid when all requirements are met. 

Room costs for residential participants will be covered. 

Parking fees and many meals will also be covered.

Educator Goals:

  • Gain more geography/history content knowledge and skills

  • Practice thinking geographically/historically on primary sources

  • Define essential questions

  • Develop an original, inquiry based lesson that can be posted online

  • Visit museums and other centers for learning

  • Network with other educators from around the state

  • Attend an optional: 3-4 Day Field Study to northeastern AZ (July 23-26)

  • Fun

Eligibility:

Only 24 teachers will be selected to participate in this professional development opportunity.   Participants must be able to attend all sessions which will usually be from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM each day.  The institute is open to teachers from all grade levels but many of the activities will be more appropriate for upper elementary and secondary classrooms.   Participants must be employed full-time as teachers in a classroom. 

 

Location: 

Most institute activities will be held on the ASU campus.  June 4 and June 10 will be half days. 

 

Participants who complete all requirements will receive:

  • 60 Recertification credits.  One to three ASU graduate credits can be arranged at participant’s expense. 

  • A stipend of $300 will be paid when all requirements are met.  (see application)

  • Room costs for residential participants.  To qualify, you must live 30 miles or more from ASU.

  • Most meals during the event.

  • A stipend of $40 for travel.

  • Teaching resources valued at over $300.

  • ASU parking fees on institute days if you are not a residential participant.

Four Corners Advanced Institute for AzGA Teacher Consultants (TCs) – July 23-26

An Advanced Institute to northeastern Arizona is under development.

GeoHistory Institute participants have the option to attend this field study and join in with current TCs.  

On the field study, some costs will be paid by AzGA but some costs will be participants’ responsibilities.
